The “Agas” custom in Mesta traces its roots back to the Ottoman period and symbolizes a bountiful harvest and the arrival of spring. According to tradition, the Turkish pashas who governed the Mastiha villages, known for imposing strict penalties, established this custom as a means to resolve disputes among the villagers.

Panagia Festival on August 15 and Saint Markella Festival on July 22 are among the most significant cultural events on the island of Chios, attracting a large number of visitors and locals. The Souma Festival is a traditional celebration held in Chios during the first two weeks of August. Souma is one of the most famous local beverages, an odorless spirit produced by distilling figs. During the festival, visitors and locals have the opportunity to enjoy the souma, participate in traditional dances, sample local delicacies, and learn about the history and production process of the drink.
The Amateur Fishermen's Festival in Mesta is a traditional event that honors the long history and rich tradition of the island's fishermen. During the festival, members of the local amateur fishermen's association serve the famous kakavia (fish soup) in the port of Mesta, offering visitors a unique gastronomic experience. Easter in Mesta
Easter in Mesta, Chios is celebrated in a unique and spectacular way. On Holy Saturday night, the village transforms into a radiant celebration filled with firecrackers and fireworks, creating an atmosphere of magic and liveliness. The tradition of burning Judas is the highlight of the celebration, while visitors watch the traditional ceremonies while strolling through the village’s beautiful covered alleys. The Easter service takes place in the central square, at the church of Old Taxiarches, followed by the lighting of the lantern, symbolizing the rebirth and joy of the Resurrection.
One of the most impressive Easter traditions in Chios is the custom of the “Rockets,” which takes place in Vrontados on Holy Saturday night. The parishes of Saint Mark and Panagia Erythiani engage in a “battle” with rockets, lighting up the sky with fireworks and filling the atmosphere with intensity and excitement. It is a spectacle that captivates the viewers, creating a sense of religious reverence
