In Mesta, the houses are connected to each other by arches — the “vótes” or “voltes”. Small stone arches that link the rooftops. That’s how we got our name.

DISCOVERDiscover Mesta
Mesta, one of the most iconic Mastiha villages of southern Chios, is situated 35 kilometers southwest of Chios Town. The village has been designated as a protected monument, with its intricate architecture dating back to the Byzantine period. It is the best-preserved medieval Mastiha village and, together with Kampos and Pyrgi, forms one of the true jewels of Chios.
DISCOVERCustoms and Traditions
Mesta is one of the most picturesque and culturally rich villages in Chios, celebrated for its enduring traditions and unique customs that showcase the island’s authentic character. Visitors have the opportunity to experience genuine cultural events, such as the “Agas” custom, held on Clean Monday — one of the most distinctive Carnival traditions of Chios.
WHY VOLTES
voltó (neuter) or voltos (masculine), refers to vaulted stone constructions. The term ‘volto’ derives from the construction method, such as the vaults in bridges, circular (upper) doors, the well-known arches with the door-locking system. The houses in Mesta are built one next to the other without gaps, while they communicate with each other through the so-called ‘vótes’ or ‘voltés’ that create arches over the narrow alleys. It is said that thanks to this architecture, one can walk around the entire village on the roofs without stepping on the ground at all! This once helped the residents to quickly gather at the central tower of Mesta, the last refuge in case of danger!”
